Workout: 20:00 cross training - stationary bike + legs & core
Weight: eh... 128.2 ick.
Made it to the gym this morning and I'm proud of myself:) I did 20 hard minutes on the bike. I had my heart rate up in the 140's the entire time, which is much better compared to my most recent trips to the gym. I guess reading a magazine doesn't help with intensity, lol.
I also did legs & core & some stretching.
glutes: 3x10x80/leg
quads: 3x10x25
hams: 3x10x25
calves: 3x10x25
wasn't sure where I was at in terms of weights so I started out safe. Q/H/C can increase next time.
planks: 3x1:00 (ugh)
some light stretching on the precor stretching station.
My herniated L4 & L5 are hurting since playing volleyball on Saturday. Its a good thing I'm starting training now because the running should help a lot. I'm in quite a bit of pain after sitting for a while. Its been a long time since I've had disc problems. Yet another reason to work on my core.

Workout: 15:00 on the bike, 15:00 walking on the treadmill on the random hill program, + glutes, hams, quads.
Weight: 125.0
Workout was fine. I did an easy 15 minutes on the bike and then the weights. I had so much time left in the morning AND I wanted to watch sportscenter to find out about the post season baseball situation (and how my tickets are going to do), so I grabbed a treadmill and walked on an incline for 15 minutes. On the bike my heart rate was in the 120's, on the treadmill it was around 107.
These are fine workouts. I did heavy weights at 3x10 sets, but I probably could have done a tad bit higher of weights. I haven't done legs in so long, I wasn't sure where to start with the weights. I also don't want totally fatigued legs when I'm running tomorrow, so not sure I'm going to go a whole lot higher on that.
Feels good to be back in the gym and to do regular workouts rather than focusing so heavily on training. I am thinking that my days of running outside are coming to an end, though, because the sunrise is at 7am now. Makes for pretty dark running even at 6am. I really don't want to run on the treadmill from now until spring, but not sure I have much choice. I may have to schedule so afternoon runs on the days that I don't babysit, otherwise it is going to be all treadmill - probably even my long runs on Saturdays. Boooo!

catching up on last week
Not sure why I haven't blogged at all this past week... so here is the skinny on how it went:
Tuesday, September 14 -
Cross training (bike) 30:00, upper body weights. Not a completely inspired workout, but satisfied that I got up and went to the gym and completed it.
Wednesday, September 15 -
3 miles with the dog = horrible. The dog got shaved on Monday and came home looking very unfit. He has not been running in quite a while since Dave started running at the gym and near his office. His 10 1/2 year old skin is sagging and he is looking like Mr. Fatty Blatso, so I told him I'd take him running now that I'm faster and better than I used to be. Ugh. He was horrible. We did 3 miles and he stopped a bajillion times to sniff and mark. I'd just get into a rhythm and he would basically sit down while we were running and pull on the leash to stop. Jerk. I was so ticked at him by the end that I started yelling at him. I will not take him running until after the race - at that point, we will learn to run together and do lots of practicing so he can get back into it. He used to be a good runner - according to Dave - but he is really out of practice and I'm not dealing with that crap while training, when I need to keep my confidence up.
Thursday, September 16 - nothing. Had no motivation to do intervals, and I wanted to sleep so I stayed home.
Friday, September 17 - 3.2 miles
This is normally a cross training day, but I didn't feel like doing it or going to the gym and I didn't want to have another rest day. Besides, I wanted a better showing that I had had on Wednesday. Much better run, although a little more difficult than I anticipated.
Saturday, September 18 - 8.5 miles
Was supposed to meet a friend at Old Plank Trails. I was going to run 10 and she'd drop when she was ready to be done (she normally does 5). She didn't show up, so I went out on my own. I did not do well. I stopped at mile 1 to take my shirt off and that, I think, was the killer - once i stopped, i was done for. I took a lot of walking breaks throughout and decided that my desire to do 10 even though the schedule said 8 was just being dumb, so i stuck with 8 and made myself believe that I wasn't failing by cutting 2 miles out. Mile 6.5 - 8.5 were very difficult as I was having digestive issues and had to stop frequently to walk until I felt okay to run again, which almost immediately made me cramp up again and need to walk. My pace was terrible because of all of that. I've had that issue before, however, not for that long of a distance... not sure what I could have done differently. I also felt pretty tired from the very beginning. I started running at 6:10, but I had been up since 4 am - not sure why. My legs also felt pretty heavy and tired, perhaps from running the day before. It wasn't the worst run I've had, but I wouldn't place it in the good category at all.
4 and 2 next week and then the race. After that, I'm going to work on running with the dog and doing less miles in each run, but more runs during the week. Perhaps 3 miles/day with 5-6 on Saturday? Not quite sure. There is a 5k in Orland on October 2 that I'd like to run in, I need to discuss that with Dave and see what his schedule is. I've only run one 5k and did horribly - I feel like I need to do this in order to conquer it.

Workout: 25:00 cross training + upper body
Weight: 126.4 (I think)
Went to the gym this morning. I am hopping back on the horse. All excuses are being thrown out and I am forging ahead with a renewed energy. I got my kitchen and family room painted, my cabinets are in the process of being painted and I feel some major self-discipline coming back. Seeing 129 on the scale may have had a little to do with it:) But having that major painting project out of the way frees up space in my head for other goals and thoughts so that has a lot to do with it too.
I did 25 minutes on the stationary bike and then upper body weights. My heart rate was in the 130's, which I consider a good number for the bike. I was not trying to kill it, but rather just doing some normal cross training. Weights were also good.
I rejoined Weight Watchers because I could do so without paying the registration fee. I rejoin mainly for the ability to use the recipe builder. I have just slightly more than a month to get down a few pounds and I'm going to do it - there is no half-hearted feeling about it this time. I will portion and count and get there.

Workout: 30:00 cross training (stationary bike) + strength
Weight: 127.0 (what?!)
I hate cross training. It seems so pointless as it never seems like as good of a workout as running. I guess its a good thing to switch it up here and there, but I still hate it. A lot. And I really have to work hard to get to the gym to do it.
I have switched to lower weights with higher reps while I'm training, but I'm still nearing failure on most things.
I don't think that 127 is an accurate weight - I believe that is water retention. However, I do need to start thinking a little more about diet. I would still love to get to 115, but it will take a lot of motivation and hard work. I'm not sure its possible to do while I'm training, but I need to put some actual thought into this. I have not been eating well for quite some time - I don't eat horribly, but I haven't been eating as well as I should be. I think a lot has to do with it being summer and having no desire to go to the grocery store with the three kids - I can't focus or think about what I'm buying while I'm there with them. And I haven't had enough focus to put together menus or grocery lists, either, while I'm home. This summer, while busy and fun, has made me feel like my mind is in a complete fog. And I don't like that at all. 2 1/2 weeks until school begins and then I feel like I'll be able to think again.
Next year, I need to do something before school ends to prepare for this aspect of summer. I should be able to put together some general meal plans and grocery lists to get me through the summer - need to remember to do that, because this sucks.

Workout: 30:00 cross training + strength
Weight: 124.0
Huh, not sure why I haven't been blogging as regularly in recent weeks... Saturday morning I ran a good 8 miles. I felt good for most of it - up until the last 2 miles when I had some digestive issues and needed to stop frequently to walk. The last mile was about where my body felt overrun, too. It was a good run - the best long run I've had in a while, I think.
Yesterday I ran 5 miles on the treadmill because we stayed up late on Sunday watching a movie and I did NOT feel like getting up at 5am to run. It was an easy run in the respect that it was on the treadmill, but I consider it a Pace run because I ran the whole thing at 9:30 pace, which I really hope I will run the race in.
This morning I went to the gym for the first time in a while (June 14th?) and did some cross training and hated it. I did 30 minutes on the stationary bike and purposely did not push myself to have a hardcore workout. I think my heart rate was in the 120's for most of the time. I feel like the time goes so slow in the gym, so it felt like the neverending workout. I also did upperbody strength machines. I decreased my weights by 10lbs and did 3 sets of 15 reps, which ended up being a nice strength workout.

Workout: 20:00 cross + weight training
Weight: 125.8
Glad to see my weight is down at least a little bit from yesterday. Hoping this will be a trend:)
Did 20 minutes on the upright bike this morning for my cross. On the way to the gym I decided that I hate the eliptical that much... that I couldn't even bear to do 20 minutes on it this morning. Heart rate was not great - 120's for the whole workout. But I needed a bit of an easier workout this morning.
My right quad is quite sore from yesterday's run. My abs are also sore. Pretty obvious to me that I haven't run in a while. However, I have NO calf pain or soreness today, which definitely excites me! I'm going to ice it again today and need to remember to ice my ankle, too. I don't think my ankle will ever be pain-free.

Workout: 15:00 circuits
Weight: 122.8
I changed the order of my circuits this morning. Usually I do bike, stairs, treadmill, eliptical. I haven't been dying through the circuits anymore so i decided to switch it up Cornbread style. This morning I did eliptical, stairs, bike, treadmill.
And I hated every.single.second of the entire hour. Oh my, it was wretchedly awful.
Eliptical - heart rate: 151
Stairs - heart rate (taken manually): 180
Bike - heart rate: 140ish
Treadmill - heart rate: 168ish, highest incline of 5%
Ankle is in a lot of pain today - probably worse than it ever has been. Hurt while I was doing the stairs and then made me wince when I started running. I'm icing it this morning to see if that helps at all.

Kept meaning to get on here yesterday and then never made it...

Workout: 4 1/2 miles + 10 minutes cross
Weight: 125.0
Run was good. Ran at 6.0 until 3.75 miles, increased to 6.1, increased to 6.2 at 4.0, 6.5 at 4.25. Ran 4.5 miles in 44.34. I only did 5 minutes of cool down as my cross training. I have to say, the additional cross training will probably get left out from here on out (actually from here on, I think there is enough miles that we don't have cross training anyway).

Workout: Circuits
Weight: 124.0
Circuits have become slightly easier since I switched programs on the stairmill. Which means I should probably switch back to the previous program!
Bike for 14:00, heart rate up to 121.
Treadmill for 14:00 with an incline interval program - highest incline was over 5%. Heart rate: 164
Stair mill for 14:00. Not sure about heartrate
Eliptical for 14:00 at level 10 to keep my heart rate up. 152-157. I hit the eliptical hard this morning.

Weight: 124.0
Workout: 13:00 circuits. Dreaded, horrible, despicable circuits.
I guess today's circuit training was as bad as previous. I think it helped that I chose a different program for the stairmill and the intervals were only 13 seconds long rather than 48 seconds long. Felt better and like it went by quicker.
Bike - 13:00. Got my heart rate up to about 145, but generally stable at 135. Never feels like I'm working very hard on the bike, which is why I do it first.
Stairmill - 13:00. Not sure about my heartrate on the stairmill because I don't know how to check it. Didn't feel out of control like it does sometimes on that machine. Still hate the stairmill. How anyone can do it for more than 15 minutes is beyond me.
Treadmill - 13:00. Ran 1.25 miles in the 13 minutes. Did the random hill program and hit a high of 5% incline. Ran the entire 13 minutes without a break at 5.8mph - did not slow my pace at any point (have always done so in the past). Heart rate was between 164 - 174 depending on the incline. Good workout. I like running the hills
Eliptical - probably close to 20:00. Got on the eliptical next to C and finished her workout with her. She was very chatty, too, about something she's upset about so I couldn't just quit after my 13 minutes without looking like a total creep - "Hey, sorry to hear about all this, but my time is up. I'm going to hit the shower now. Hope it works out for you." I love her. I would sit and listen to her forever if she needed me to. Ultimately - it wasn't about me, it was about her.
Good workout. I always feel like I could take a nap when I get home.

Weight: 124.8
I feel like a chicken running around with my head cut off this week. And it isn't looking better until next week. Hence no post yesterday and the late post today.
Thursdays are circuit day. I.HATE.THURSDAY. Hate it. Hate.it. Despise it. Dread it. Hate it.
It is by far the worst, most horrible, hardest workout of the week. I never want Wednesday evenings to end... because then I'll have to wake up on Thursday and do the dreaded circuits.
Today I started with the bike - 12:00. Had my heart rate up to 135 bpm on the bike. I don't push it a whole lot on the bike. I consider it slightly better than a warm up.
Moved on to 12:00 on the stairmill. I would like to curse the person who created the stairmill. It is the worst. horrible. wretched. And at 12 minutes, the intervals lasted 48 seconds each. Thats a long fricken time when I'm working so hard that my forearms are sweating. Really? Forearms? Yes. And dripping. I think if it weren't for the stairmill, I may not hate circuits as much. I really despise the stairmill and would rather cut my arm off with a butter knife than do it for much longer than that.
Next up was hill intervals on the treadmill for 13:00. I ran the entire 13 minutes without a break at 5.8 mph. I think the top hill was around 4 or 5% incline for over a minute. That one was tough, but it was the last minute so I couldn't allow myself to stop. Heartrate was up around 178 bpm on the treadmill.
Finally I ended with the eliptical for 13:00. I consider this circuit to be slightly more than a cool down. I certainly don't slow my pace down to a cool down level, but I'm not hitting it as hard as I do the stairmill and the treadmill.
If I wanted a higher level circuit workout I should consider not reading magazines while doing the bike and the eliptical. I may consider that for next week.
I'm always so glad to have it over. So happy to be in the locker room drinking a glass of water and hopping in the shower. It feels like a huge accomplishment, even though I have no ability to measure my performance. I guess my measure of success is how much it sucked. And every Thursday it sucks. A lot.
Fridays are 20:00 of lighter cross training with upper body + leg press, abductors & adductors. Its a much lighter day and a welcome reprieve after the treachery of Thursday.

Workout:
Turbulence Training workout 1A
TT HIIT A - 4.08 miles
I'm trying this new workout - Turbulence Training. It is kind of a body weight, weight training, circuit training kind of thing. Everything is done with no rest between exercises. I guess I'll have to explain it a little more at another time. Anyway, I'm going to be doing this instead of weights for the next few weeks to give myself a little change of pace. It was nice this morning - hard, but I'm not sure it kicked my bum like I was hoping it would. We'll see how I feel tomorrow:)
The HIIT was a little more intense than what I normally have been doing (LH intervals at 1 minute intervals). Today I did LH intervals at 45 second intervals. I was getting up near 112 rpm consistently during the high intervals, so that was awesome!
Have to get back into eating clean today. I am coming off of a half-week of not paying attention to what I was eating and when I was eating. I was sick and lacked motivation last week. And the weekend was not so great - I had to make truffles for Dave and I only sampled one of each kind (I made 4 kinds) so I was good with that. I need to get my motivation back - I need to figure out if I need to get my motivation back. Still struggling with thoughts about all of this. Maybe these TT workouts will help.

Challenge 3
Beginning Date: October 15, 2007
Ending Date: January 6, 2008
Workout: HIIT on the bike and chest/biceps
distance: 8.0 miles
time: 30:20
My workout was good this morning. Somehow I got my minutes mixed up on the bike so thats why I only did 30 minutes instead of the normal 31. I'm not sure where or how I messed it up, so I don't know if I missed a high intensity minute or had one extra. Whatever. It was good.
I also did chest/biceps this morning. I haven't been planning these exercises very well. I have to take some time to look up some better exercises on the machine. I should have done that last weekend, but I didn't. I will try to do it this weekend. I got a good workout in, but I feel unprepared and like I'm not doing the best I could be because of it.
Yesterday was a slightly free day. Nora had a doctor's appointment at 8:40 in Palos Heights and since Dave was out of town, I had to get the girls out the door early. I took them to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast rather than trying to get them all to eat cereal in time. Anyway, I didn't get breakfast before we left and then when we got home I shoveled the driveway so I didn't eat anything until 12:30 - I had two bites of a donut, but other than that, nothing. So I didn't eat on schedule, I didn't eat totally clean, but I don't believe I went over on calories. It isn't ideal, but I'm not beating myself up over it.
I'm really beginning to think about all of this in a longer term way - can this be "for life"? Can I eat like this and workout like this long term? I don't think so. But then what should it look like for me to be healthy? I haven't answered that yet, but I'm thinking about it a lot.

Workout: HIIT on the bike
distance: 8.15miles
time: 31:00
I also did triceps and back this morning on the new gym. Actually I did about half and half on the new gym and with free weights. I'm still finding the right weights for the gym, but I think I've found some good exercises. There a few, though, that I need to wait to use the gym until I'm stronger - like bent over lateral rows. I can do them with free weights, but not the gym because the gym starts at 24 lbs and I can't do that much.
I ran yesterday and did legs on the gym. I don't think I got even close to as good of a workout with the gym as I do with free weights, but at some point that may have to be sacrificed in order to save my back, which I'm okay with.
I weighed myself today - 130.0. So I'm still losing even thought I haven't been super strict with staying at 1700 calories per day. I can't wait to see the 120s! My BF was at 9.5 on the calipers - I think that is 20.55%. I have to believe that those readings are off in some way. I mean I believe that my BF is going down consistently every week, but I think if I were TRULY 20.55% body fat I would be seeing some more definition. So I think the numbers are off by a few points. Regardless, it is measuring progress and that is what matters.

Not much to report. Didn't feel like getting out of bed this morning, but did it anyway. Will strive for a clean day today with the exception of a free meal tonight after church. Also - need to get all of my water in.

Workout: HIIT on the bike
Distance: 8.11 miles
Time: 31:00
I took my photos yesterday - I was pretty disappointed. I guess considering how much BF I have lost and the change in my measurements over the last 4-6 weeks, I was expecting to see some pretty significant changes since October 15. I really didn't see much difference - perhaps its my own self criticism, but I didn't see much change. Oh well, it won't deter me. The numbers on the tape measure don't lie and even if the BF measurement is not 100% accurate, it has been consistent and it has been going down.
I did triceps and biceps yesterday afternoon and will do back/chest this afternoon.
My kids are driving me crazy - okay, its just Georgia. She is so destructive. I'm so exhausted by the end of the day from picking up after her, from being frustrated about all of the stuff she is destroying and ruining in our house and from listening to her fits... Its a wonder I get out of bed in the morning. Its been tough for the last couple of days.

Workout: HIIT on the bike
Distance: 8.09miles
Time: 31:00
I could tell my legs were super tired from lifting yesterday. They did not want to pedal that bike! But I still sucked it up and tried to kick it into high gear for a good HIIT workout. I did pretty well. I maintained mid 90 rpms during my high intervals - not as great as 100, but I was happy with it considering how sore and tired my legs are today.
Weight: 130.6
BF: 21.02%
Will take photos sometime today - can't wait to see the changes, but also a little scared that they won't be noticeable.

Ending Date: January 6, 2008
Workout: steady state on the bike
distance: 8.13 miles

speed: 75-80 rpms
I did not feel like getting up this morning to workout, but I did because I didn't have a true cardio session yesterday (we did walk fast downtown pushing strollers last night, but not the same thing).
I think Monday is going to be a bad day to take pictures - after Thanksgiving, after a 4 day weekend which has proven to be difficult to eat at the proper times. I will do better today, though - I will make sure I'm eating at the proper times today and we'll have a free meal tonight. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to have a free meal in the early part of the day so I'm not retaining so much water by having it at night.
Have been thinking a lot about this being a for-life thing. Not sure if it is. Am trying to figure it out. A friend has just started a program called Precision Nutrition. It is definitely something that I'm willing to look into as it focuses more on eating healthy and having it be a part of life rather than doing this extreme sort of calorie/carb/protein counting. I can do this for the rest of the challenge - I can do it until my birthday, which would make it a full year, but I'm not sure I can do it for the rest of my life. Not sure where to go with this.

Workout: HIIT on the bike
distance: 8.22 miles
time: 31:00
I really kicked it in the bum this morning, holy cow - thats the longest distance I've gone so far while doing 30:00 HIIT on the bike.
Today is Thanksgiving. We are driving up to Michigan to have it with the Wiersma family. It was actually the year to spend with Dave's family, but since we can't afford to go out to Virginia and they aren't coming here, we've begged our way into my family's dinner. Aunt Sandy is cooking so it should be interesting - it won't just be your standard midwest Thanksgiving fare. I'm looking forward to the meal and the afternoon and evening. I'm glad I lifted yesterday so I don't have to worry about not doing so today. Tomorrow I'll miss a running session, but we're going downtown in the evening to see the tree and the windows, so I'll get some walking in. I'll also have to find time to do shoulders and abs tomorrow - shouldn't be a problem.
Pictures on are Monday so I need to have a good weekend.

Challenge 3
Beginning Date: October 15, 2007
Ending Date: January 6, 2008
Workout: HIIT on bike
distance: 8.08
time: 31:00
I kicked my own bum on the bike this morning. I really made a huge effort to get beyond even the 90 rpms during my high interval minutes. I was able to maintain about 99-100 for several of the high minutes and was quite proud of myself - especially on the day after a leg workout.
I weighed myself again this morning after spending yesterday trying to rehydrate myself. I was at 130.6. I'm still recording yesterday's weight - 132.2, but it makes me feel good to see that loewr number on the scale. I just can't wait to break through to the 120's again - it has been a really, really long time.
Regardless of what the scale says, though, I am loving my body and am happy with what is going on. I know that I work harder than 99% of the people that cross my path - and even if I'm not tiny, I'm strong - and people are taking notice. My FIL saw the muscles in my arms when he was here. My MIL was certain that I had lost some more weight and was surprised to hear that I hadn't lost any. I am enjoying this - I like what I eat, I feel I make responsible choices and am setting a good example for my kids in terms of eating right and exercising. It is a priority in our lives and we're very intentional about it and I'm proud of that.
I have quite a ways to go in terms of cardio training. I feel like I'm in good health, but I could be even better. I still want to be able to run 5 miles in 45:00 3 times a week. I know that goal is a long way off right now, but I'm steadily working toward it. And after I reach that goal, I'll set another and another. This is the way to live - not complacent, constantly striving forward to be even better than before.
This afternoon I will do triceps/biceps
