Workout: Long run - 7 miles

This run was awesome. I felt really good throughout the entire run - felt like I could run for hours, but I started chaffing under my left arm and had to stop. It is a step down week and the calendar said only 5-6 miles, but I felt so good I ran the extra mile and definitely felt like I could have run at least 3-4 more. I ran the first 3 at 10:00/ and the middle 2 at 9:40/ and the last 2 at 9:30/.
I watched The Sting with Robert Redford & Paul Newman while I was running. It was a very pleasant way to pass the time.
Wondering if cutting down my running days has been the reason I've felt so good in these last two runs. I think maybe I'll cut down to 3 days/ week and see how that goes. That way I can do a normal run at the beginning of the week of 4-5 miles, a tempo in the middle of the week and a long run on Saturday. I'll cross train and do yoga on the other days. And do my PU/SQU/SU challenge. I'll sit down this week and figure out the timing of it all, but that sounds good - I like how I've felt on these last two runs.

Workout: Long Run - 8 miles
Time: 77:00
Pace: 9:36 (average)
Weight: 127.0
Run felt really good this morning. I'm pretty dehydrated, so that sucks, but I felt good. I decided to run at 0 incline so I'd have a chance at having a decent run.
Thursday morning I went to a foot doctor to have him look at one of my toenails that is growing in kind of funky. I talked to him about the pain I've been having in the ball of my right foot. He took xrays and said that it is my second toe joint that is "going"... as in that is what is causing the pain and it is going to get worse over time.
I'm thinking about quitting running altogether. I don't want to be like my mom, who has had multiple surgeries on both feet and is still in a great amount of pain and is basically immobile. Her lifestyle is dramatically reduced, in my opinion, because she can't be on her feet or walk for any length of time (she does anyway, and then her feet hurt so bad that she has to stay off of them for days at a time). I don't want that in my life. And if running will cause that, then I don't want to run. Running didn't cause her issues - not exactly sure what her issues are - but if running is going to cause me significant pain in the future, then is it worth doing now?
But I don't belong to a gym that has a pool or classes. So I'd be stuck to the eliptical, the bike and the stair mill. All of which I hate. And I'm not sure I'd stay motivated. I have to put a lot of thought into this. The nurse taped my foot, so I wanted to run today to see if it makes a difference.

Workout: 7.25 miles
Time: 70:00
Pace: 9:39 (average)
Weight: 126.4
So glad I have this out of the way. Was not looking forward to doing a long run. I'm kind of getting sick of running and this sounded awful. Not sure if running outside would make a difference in my being sick of it. Perhaps. But its got to get a lot warmer for me to run outside at 6am. And thinking about getting up early on Saturday mornings to drive out to Old Plank Trail to do longer runs than this sounds soooo... ick. Not diggin' the training right now.
I made a playlist entirely of praise & worship music. It was really nice to run to that this morning instead of the same ol' songs that I normally run to. For one thing, the songs are longer, so while a 7 mile run with my normal playlist would be about 18 songs, this run was only 14 songs. So when I'm counting songs and find out that after 5 songs I've already run 2.75 miles when I normally would have barely hit the 2 mile mark, that is awesome.
Beyond that, though, I'm really trying to immerse myself in God and become more aware of him throughout the day. I find that it really helps me to listen to p&w music during the day... it refocuses my attention on what I should be focused on. Unfortunately I've been living in a stretch of time where if I think about God beyond my bible reading the in the morning it is a miracle. I know it is happening and I confess it and want to be more aware, but it doesn't change. In the past, I've found that playing p&w music helps me a lot with that. I'm also listening to Moody Bible radio in the car instead of normal talk radio banter. I find the station and the people on it to be too fundamental and conservative for me, however, I'm hearing Bible verses when i normally wouldn't be and their fundamentalist and conservative opinions are causing me to think about issues and where I stand on them and what I think. It also prompts conversations between me & Dave and other people. So even though I don't like much of what I hear, it is good to hear it.
So listening to my p&w playlist had several good effects this morning. I did find myself struggling to run against the beat of the music a couple of times, which was frustrating, but overall it was pretty close to my pace.

Workout: Long Run - 5.5 miles
Time: 53:47
Pace: 9:44
Weight: 128.6
Dave and I revised our training plan. He ran 8 miles this morning and really felt like he wasn't ready for it. As we were talking about it, we both felt like the training plan we're using is just too much for us. So we're going to modify the plan we used for the two half marathons last year and add a couple of weeks to it so we can get our long runs up to 14 1/2 miles by the time we get to the race. This is the only way that I'm willing to still run the race - I just don't WANT to be running 5-7 miles on Mondays and Wednesday right now. I want to include and focus on other things.
Todays run, then, was supposed to be 5 miles. I ran outside for the first time since November and I over dressed. I had to stop at 1 mile to remove a layer and leave it on a fire hydrant :) On the way home, though, I was heading into a pretty icy wind, so the gloves went back on... but I was still fine without that additional fleece that I had left on the side of the street.
It was really nice to run outside again and I'm going to do it more often. The hills, though, kicked my butt. To my credit, though, I did not walk up any hills - I ran all of them, but I did stop to walk at the top of a lot of the bigger ones. I didn't let myself walk for very long, just enough to catch my breath. All in all I felt good about my run and I'm happy to be running again. And I was very pleased with my pace - I was a bit worried that I'd get home and find that I ran an 11:00 pace and I'd be disappointed with myself. I'm pleased with under 10:00.
I'm really happy to be at 5 miles instead of 8 :)

Workout: Long Run - 7 miles
Time: 1:08:23
Pace: 9:46 (average)
Incline: 2% (mostly)
Weight: 128.2
This run was fine. I decided to do it at a slower pace to try to get through it a little better and I think that helped. I varied my pace and incline throughout the run based on how I felt. I never went lower than a 1% incline, though, and didn't spend much time at 1%. I mainly ran at a 9:40 pace, but a little 10:00 and a little 9:30 mixed in there at times. I really struggled through the first 2.5 miles but mentally pushed through it, making myself get through 6 songs before I could step off to turn the fan on. That helped. The last mile was a struggle, too, because I just wanted to be done.
Dave and I are thinking about revising the training plan. He struggled through his 7 miles this morning moreso than I did. I did pretty well considering, although I mentally battled through a lot of it. He didn't feel like he did as well. We both feel like this is kind of too much too early. There are also 3 15 mile runs before the race. I'm just not sure we're at that level and I'm not sure we need to pretend to be at that level. We're not training for times, we're training to finish.

Workout: 5.3 miles on the treadmill
Pace: 9:31
Time: 50:30
Incline: 2%
Weight: won't discuss
Don't know my exact distance or time... I was intending to not look at the display until after 12 songs, because I figured 5 miles would be about 12-13 songs and staring at the display is miserable. So I jumped off after 6 songs so I could take my heart rate (it was 174bpm) at what I believed would be close to halfway. And after counting my heartrate, I accidentally pulled the safety key off and lost all of my information. So I ran the exact same 6 songs for a second time and figured that would give me the best idea of what my original info was. Which is why I ran 5.3 instead of 5.0.
Run went well. I am continually dehydrated and have been eating garbage for days/weeks. I feel like a complete slug and am disappointed in myself for doing it, but I also recognize that this is what happens during the last couple of weeks in December every year. I also know that as of next Monday things will be 180* different. I am the queen of self-discipline when I'm motivated... I just have a hard time being motivated around holidays... takes so much extra energy to be disciplined, so I just give in entirely and stop feeling guilty. I don't feel guilty, I just wish I wasn't all or nothing.

Workout: 7.36 miles
Time: 1:12:20
Pace: average 9:48
November total: 45.38/60
Went out at 1:00 in the afternoon. It was somewhat chilly and pretty windy heading to the East. I did well for most of the run, but had decided kind of early on that I would take a short walking break after every 5 songs. Songs 6-10, though, had a few breaks in there because it was a lot of hills during that point. But the last part of the run was especially good. I feel like I really get my groove going around mile 4, which kind of sucks :)
I also feel like I'm in a rut. Like donating blood disrupted my flow. But not only that, my legs are tired and sore. My right foot has pain near the bottom of my toes. I'm considering taking a running break during December, but am worried about losing my fitness. I can't get as good of a workout on the bike or the eliptical at the gym. But I guess it will be like starting training from scratch. Or maybe I just need to significantly cut down my mileage this month. Perhaps taking on this 60 miles in November goal was a bit too much... I didn't cut down hardly at all after the half in September. I ran nearly 70 miles in October, which is an awful lot of miles for not training for anything.
And I think I might need new shoes already. Which bugs me because the shoes I ran in yesterday - my newest pair - have less than 100 miles on them. I don't have the money to go out and buy a $100 pair of shoes right now. But my knees hurt while I was running yesterday and my ankles are really sore and tired afterward. Maybe its just more of an overtraining issue and I need to calm down this month and start up from scratch on December 28th for the 5/3RBR. I'm going to get my 60 miles this month and then figure it out. I should also get back into weight training and cross training. And should actively try to lose 5 pounds. And try to get my cholesterol lower (was 265 when I donated blood - ouch... hasn't been that high since 1999).

catching up on last week
Not sure why I haven't blogged at all this past week... so here is the skinny on how it went:
Tuesday, September 14 -
Cross training (bike) 30:00, upper body weights. Not a completely inspired workout, but satisfied that I got up and went to the gym and completed it.
Wednesday, September 15 -
3 miles with the dog = horrible. The dog got shaved on Monday and came home looking very unfit. He has not been running in quite a while since Dave started running at the gym and near his office. His 10 1/2 year old skin is sagging and he is looking like Mr. Fatty Blatso, so I told him I'd take him running now that I'm faster and better than I used to be. Ugh. He was horrible. We did 3 miles and he stopped a bajillion times to sniff and mark. I'd just get into a rhythm and he would basically sit down while we were running and pull on the leash to stop. Jerk. I was so ticked at him by the end that I started yelling at him. I will not take him running until after the race - at that point, we will learn to run together and do lots of practicing so he can get back into it. He used to be a good runner - according to Dave - but he is really out of practice and I'm not dealing with that crap while training, when I need to keep my confidence up.
Thursday, September 16 - nothing. Had no motivation to do intervals, and I wanted to sleep so I stayed home.
Friday, September 17 - 3.2 miles
This is normally a cross training day, but I didn't feel like doing it or going to the gym and I didn't want to have another rest day. Besides, I wanted a better showing that I had had on Wednesday. Much better run, although a little more difficult than I anticipated.
Saturday, September 18 - 8.5 miles
Was supposed to meet a friend at Old Plank Trails. I was going to run 10 and she'd drop when she was ready to be done (she normally does 5). She didn't show up, so I went out on my own. I did not do well. I stopped at mile 1 to take my shirt off and that, I think, was the killer - once i stopped, i was done for. I took a lot of walking breaks throughout and decided that my desire to do 10 even though the schedule said 8 was just being dumb, so i stuck with 8 and made myself believe that I wasn't failing by cutting 2 miles out. Mile 6.5 - 8.5 were very difficult as I was having digestive issues and had to stop frequently to walk until I felt okay to run again, which almost immediately made me cramp up again and need to walk. My pace was terrible because of all of that. I've had that issue before, however, not for that long of a distance... not sure what I could have done differently. I also felt pretty tired from the very beginning. I started running at 6:10, but I had been up since 4 am - not sure why. My legs also felt pretty heavy and tired, perhaps from running the day before. It wasn't the worst run I've had, but I wouldn't place it in the good category at all.
4 and 2 next week and then the race. After that, I'm going to work on running with the dog and doing less miles in each run, but more runs during the week. Perhaps 3 miles/day with 5-6 on Saturday? Not quite sure. There is a 5k in Orland on October 2 that I'd like to run in, I need to discuss that with Dave and see what his schedule is. I've only run one 5k and did horribly - I feel like I need to do this in order to conquer it.

Workout: 12.25 miles
Time: 2:02:14
Pace: average 10:00/mile
Weight: 126.0
Ran at Old Plank Trail again this morning. It was drizzling as I left the driveway and I thought about going back inside and going out later since Cornbread was taking the girls to the office all day, but then I realized that I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep anyway, so I decided to suck it up and head out there. I got there at about 5:50 and it was still pitch dark and didn't look to be lightening any time soon because of the overcast sky. I was a bit nervous about running by myself in the dark on a deserted trail... I wasn't scared, but was coming to the conclusion that it simply was not a wise decision. I decided to wait 10 minutes to see if it lightened up and if it didn't I would head home (20 minutes drive). At that point another car parked in the parking lot. Within the next few minutes - actually right at the point that I decided to leave and go home - a guy got out of the car and started running the trail in the direction I was planning to go. That gave me some confidence that someone else was out there (and ahead of me scaring the boogyman away if need be), so I got out of the car and started in the drizzle.
I was planning to go out 4 miles, come back, stop at the car for a drink and then go out 2 miles in the opposite direction and come back. I felt really good for the first leg. Initially I planned to try to run the first 4 miles / 10 songs and then take a walking break. As I got closer I decided mile 4 or the end of song 10, whichever came last. Song 10 ended at about 4 1/2 miles, so I decided to go to 5 miles, then at 5 miles I decided to go to song 15 (which would be about 6 miles), then at song 15 decided to go to the car. I made it to 7 miles without walking before my body just stopped and I took a short walking break. Got to the car (8 miles), drank some gatorade and then remembered I had a 100 calorie pack of almonds in my purse... not ideal, but calories nonetheless, so I shoveled them in, stopped at a drinking fountain on my way out for the last leg and went on my way.
As I began the last 4 miles I knew I was tired... although i was feeling a bit reenergized from the short break and the calories, I knew my body was being taxed and was tired. I remembered Amy writing in her running blog about learning the art of walking BEFORE being tired, so I determined I would stop for a short walk after every 3 songs. I made it 3 songs, and then I made it 2 songs and then 1 song. My body was DONE :)
I ran into a friend at 11.5/11.75 miles - right before the hill up the bridge. We stopped to chat for a couple of minutes. I had been bound and determined to run the entire last two songs to the car (probably 3/4 of a mile), which included running up that hill, but I wasn't disappointed to stop to chat during that last section right before that hill :) I did end up running that hill, I just happened to caught my breath for a minute or two beforehand.
Overall it was a great run. I felt good for a huge portion of it. I did not do well afterward, though. I was exhausted. I did not sleep well the night before. I was not well hydrated. And I was in no mood to make myself a protein shake or any other food or drink any water afterward. This = recipe for a disaster:) I went to bed at 9:30 and dozed for an hour, but when I woke up my body hurt everywhere and I really had to mentally battle to get out of bed. I went down and had a cup of coffee and felt a lot better and had a whole lot more energy. I laid low for the day, though, and just hung out by myself and picked up the house.
I am ready for this race. I am excited to get it over with so I don't have to do these long runs anymore! I start tapering this coming week which I'm very excited about. I run 5 on Mon, 3 on Wed, 8 on Sat, 4 on Mon, 2 on Wed and then 2 days of rest before the race. 22 more miles before the race! And then Jason is trying to get me to do the 5/3 RiverBank Run in May - 15 miles. I told him to talk to me at Christmas because there is NO WAY I would commit to running that right now. I hate these long runs. HATE.THEM. I don't think my body is meant to run that many miles at one time. I'm good for 8. Actually, I was pretty good for 10 this morning, but after that it is purely mental will power to continue and every step hurts. I have no idea how people run more than this and how they more than double what I did this morning. Thinking about the training for a marathon makes me want to cry, let alone the race itself. I'm glad some people can and will do them, but I don't think a marathon is ever in my future.

I ran at Old Plank Trail in Frankfort this morning. What a huge difference a flat route makes - wow! It was also nice and cool and no humidity, which also makes a big difference.
The trail is paved, wide, flat and beautiful. And I did really, really well. I took a break at 3 miles, 6 miles and 8 1/2 miles and walked a short bit. By the 8 1/2 mile point, I was ready to be done - my body was over it, but I made short goals for myself and allowed a little more walking in the last 2 1/2 mile stretch and because of that, I finished the last mile very strong. I can't believe the difference between this week and last week. I actually feel like I could run this race and be okay.
I did not blog about it, but I also ran 6.5 miles on Thursday morning at the same pace (9:54). It was a tough run after having done intervals the day before, but it was good. The change in weather makes it so much more enjoyable. AND there was an amazing sunrise that stretched across the sky from Orland all the way to Will-Cook Rd and I really focused on looking at it and appreciating it, which took my mind off of the actually physical activity that I was doing :)
I've also been focusing on telling myself how well I'm doing and how good I'm feeling, instead of how miserable I feel. That seems to make a big difference, too!
I'm definitely looking forward to my taper weeks and to running less mileage after the race. I think I'm going to cut down to 3 miles a couple of times a week and maybe 5 on Saturday. That sounds like a BREEZE to me right now - I can't wait!

Ran Waterfall Glen with Michelle this morning. I still suck. It was humid again and my clothes could be wrung out at the end. I felt bad with all of the times that I made Michelle stop to walk, but she didn't seem to care too much. I don't know what it is with me... I get so disappointed in myself when I stop so much, but my body stops without my mind intending to do so.
Oh well, another run to mark off... I really need to start focusing on being healthy again - drinking my water, eating right, running better, doing my cross training and strength training. Its time to put it all together and be more consistent and intentional about it all.

Workout: Scheduled - 10 miles; Actual - 9 1/2 - 10
Weight: ?
Two Years Ago
Cornbread and I met Mark at the Waterfall Glen forest preserve in Darien (Argonne National Laboratories) at 6:30am to do a 9-10 mile trail run. Cornbread hasn't run since before we went to Yosemite because he hurt his heel when he jumped off of a rock. He's been working out, but hasn't been running. He thought he could probably do it by now. In addition, my sister and family were at our house for the weekend, so we had babysitters in the morning. AND, since my confidence is so low right now, I really wanted to run with someone for the long run.
The trail map said the trail was 9 miles and the stuff I saw on the web said 9 miles, but after we hit the 9 mile marker we ran another 1/2 - 1 mile to get back to our car. So I'm not sure what the exact mileage was, but it was certainly over 9.
Mark has not done much running this year, so he wasn't quite as up to it as I think he anticipated. I was miserable for the first 2 miles and really wanted to stop to walk, but wouldn't give in and make them stop. He stopped right at that point and we took a break to walk. The next 2 miles were again kind of miserable, but I was just starting to settle in and get into a groove and then he stopped again, around 4 miles. It was kind of this way for the first 6 miles... by that point I was definitely settled in. We stopped at a bathroom at 7 miles and Mark never really got it back after that. I was okay for the next 2 miles, but mile 8-10 were rough for me and I stopped more often to walk, but for shorter breaks.
The weather was not hot, but it was incredibly humid and by mile 7 my shorts were falling off. The mosquitos were also bad - we had sprayed before we started, but had to stop around mile 6 to reapply because we had sweat it off and they were biting me everywhere.
It was kind of a miserable situation, however, it was kind of fun and I'm glad we did it. Its a nice run and I would definitely go again. Much nicer to run on a trail like that than through the neighborhoods. Next week: 11 miles. UGH.

Workout: Long Run - supposed to be 9 1/2 miles
Distance: 1.5 miles outside, 9 miles on treadmill
Weight: 127.4
I have a serious mental block going right now. A really bad one. Probably worse than it ever has been. This is not just about running straight and not stopping to walk, this is about running at. all.
I mapped out a good 9 1/2 mile route for this morning. I slept until 8. I had a little bowl of granola with milk before I went out. I griped about going and then walked out the door with the intention of running slowly. And immediately I was unhappy and tired and wanted to stop, but I pushed through thinking that if I could get through a mile, I would get through the whole thing. After I hit a mile, however, I just became overwhelmed at the enormity of the run. The distance. The route. The time. The hills. The number of long runs I had left before the race. How tired my legs already felt (probably not a good idea to do hard intervals the day before a long run). Had the route not passed by my street at that point, I would have finished, but unfortunately, it was simply to easy to turn home and I did. And I'm still mad at myself.
I sat for a few minutes and debated about whether I should finish on the treadmill or skip it altogether. I also debated about whether or not I even wanted to run in this race. And I checked other training plans to find out what their long runs would be for today. Our previous plan (novice) would have been 6 miles. The intermediate plan would have been 8. So I wasn't too far off with my 9 1/2.
I finally decided to finish on the treadmill. But I would run at an incline to make it a better workout.
So I ran 9 miles on the treadmill. Most of it at a 2.5% incline. A short time at 3% and a short time at 2%.
And I am tired. And still discouraged. I'm going to have to beg Cornbread or Michelle to run 10 with me next week to get me through it.

Scheduled workout: 7.5 miles
Actual workout: 8.87
Weight: 122.6
I actually got up this morning to do my run, but went to change my clothes and realized that all of my running clothes were soaking in the washer. So I couldn't run this morning. I went back and forth all morning about when I would run - a) on the treadmill whenever I wanted, b) tomorrow morning, or c) in the afternoon after Cornbread came home from the office.
Problems with each of them:
a) 7 1/2 miles on the treadmill without a book to read = horrific
a) 7 1/2 miles on the treadmill without a book to read = horrific
b) Sunday is the only morning that we don't set the alarm, and I really enjoy getting up, going downstairs, making coffee, getting the newspaper and reading all morning.
c) it was 85 degrees and 50% humidity this afternoon and I likely would be running around 1:30/2:00 - worst time of day.
I went outside and worked on the yard a bit and didn't think it was too hot and felt a nice breeze. At one point the clouds covered the sun and the weather was perfect. The sky had some big fluffy clouds, so I thought that perhaps my run would be partly shaded and cooler... so I went out.
And it was horrible. By the time I got to the running path (1 1/5 miles) I was pretty miserable, but thought I'd be a little better once I got back on the street and back into the breeze. Wrong. At that point I decided to pack it in and go home. At some point I decided I would finish on the treadmill, which I did.
So I ran 4.37 miles outside at a 10:30 pace with A LOT of walking and then ran 4.5 miles on the treadmill at a 9:25 pace with the incline between .5 & 1%. I had figured that my outside portion was possibly 3.5 miles if I was lucky, so I thought I'd do 4 on the treadmill, but then that turned into 4.5 based on the time and wanting to finish a song. I was pretty surprised when I mapped my outside run at 4.37 miles.
I checked a book out of the library called Core Performance: endurance. I read a review of it and it is a training plan that is built around working out smarter and more efficiently, not harder and longer. I'm intrigued and hope to get through it this weekend.
I really hate long runs :)

Workout: Long Run
Distance: 7.57 miles
Time: 1:19:47
Pace: 10:30
We're in Grand Rapids this weekend and Cornbread and I took the opportunity to let the girls sleep in Nana and Papa's room last night so we could go running together this morning. I mapped out a 9.1 mile run that began at Calvin and went around Reed's Lake and ended by running around Calvin's campus. We mistakenly chopped off 1.5 miles while running, which I'm disappointed about, but it was still a good run.
The route was really, really nice. Calvin's campus is a bit hilly, but the path around the lake was flat - for the most part. Most of the run was in the shade and it was littered with other runners, walkers and bikers. It was fun to be back here and it was fun to run together.
Training begins tomorrow. Going to have to think about that and whether to postpone or skip the first day since we'll be here and not at home. Will decide that tonight.

Workout: Long Run - 7.47 miles
Time: 1:17:56
Pace: 10:20
Weight: 123.4
Wow was it horrible this morning. I chose to get up and run at 5:30 because I have to work all morning and its going to be hot and humid today and I didn't want to run in 90 degree humidity in the afternoon. I'm not sure that 75 degree humidity at 5:30am is any better. It was bad, bad, bad.
I had planned an 8 1/2 mile route... I'm glad I made it even 7 1/2. I made it to 3 1/2 miles before having to stop and really decide what I was going to do - keep going or cut it short to 4 1/2 miles. I very seriously considered doing just the 4 1/2 miles because I was pretty miserable, but I persevered and allowed myself to stop and walk if I needed to. I did well, although I did not make it up the last hill going East on 151st - I made it halfway up and walked the rest. After getting my drink at the park, I walked for a song and decided I would run 2 songs and walk 1 song the whole way home. At that time I also decided that I had to cut out a mile so I could be home in time for Cornbread to go out at 7. For the last mile, my shorts were falling down because they and my body were so wet from sweat. I couldn't keep them over my hips and I was a little nervous a few times that they were going to fall to my knees. Overall, everything was bad, but I did it and I got home okay.

Workout: 9 miles on the treadmill
Time: 90:00
Pace: 10:00/mile
Weight: 124.6
This whole reading while running on the treadmill thing is very dangerous for my training, however at the same time I can get some really serious mileage in because I feel like I can go forever. I stopped at 9 miles because I had to get ready to go to church... I could have gone a few more if I had more time and more pages to read (I finished my book anyway).
I scratched the idea of running outside because it was humid and I hate running when its humid - bad enough on the treadmill in a cold basement with a fan blowing directly on me, but outside is awful and well, I'm spoiled and I don't have to do it if I don't want to :) And I was really into my book (What the Dog Saw, by Malcolm Gladwell). I recognize, though, that I need to get back outside... the other issue with running outside is that I'll have to do it early in the morning before Cornbread leaves for work, whereas with the treadmill I can do it at any time during the day because the girls are hanging around, but not on top of me. So the treadmill wins out every time I'm tired... running later in the day feels better, too. So many reasons to do it on the treadmill, but I know its better to be outside.
When I begin training for the race I will be outside for most runs. Since the schedule has 5 days of running, I think 3 will be outside. Intervals and tempos will be inside. Pace, long and hills will be outside. The variety will be awesome - I can't wait to begin!

Workout: 9.29 miles
Time: 1:37:55
Pace: 10:30
Weight: 124.4
I wanted to do a long run outside today because I haven't done one outside since the race. I had intended to do a 10+ mile route, but I cut it short because I was tiring out. I think 8 of the miles I ran this morning were horrible;)
Started out with foot pain... I have a chipped bone at the top of my left foot and it doesn't bother me too often, but it was first thing out this morning. That seemed to dissipate and then, it was the lower back clenching + hip/thigh pain. That went away and then it was my right forearm and hand feeling slightly numb from carpal tunnel. I'm just a 34 year old mess! I ran through all of that - although I stopped and walked a couple of times in the middle to let my arms get some normal feeling back in them.
At about 3 miles I decided that I needed to simply enjoy my time out there instead of worry about pace, mileage, hills, etc. So I took it easy and allowed myself some extended walking breaks. The longest walking break was at the pond - from the water fountain to the top of the hill in front of St. Patrick's. That was the longest I've walked in a long time. I ended up taking several walking breaks in the last 2 1/2 miles. I was tiring out - first thing in the morning, slightly dehydrated, no fuel other than about 8 almonds before I left, my body was giving in even though my mind wasn't. I was happy with my mileage and my time when I got home. Given how much I walked, I must have been running between 9:30 & 10:00.
I need to remember to just be happy that I'm out there and thankful that I'm able to move, run and breathe.

Workout: 20:00 warmup run, legs
Weight: 124.4
Workout was fine this morning. I cut out the abs because I was running late... I'm babysitting again, so I definitely try to get home in time in the morning to be able to do my prayer/devotions before he comes over (which could be any time between 7:30 & 8). The 2 miles on the treadmill was a little wonky... just tightness in my lower back and thigh again, but overall, fine. I ran at a 6.0 pace, which felt a little slow and kind of painful. For the last few minutes I upped it to 6.5 and then back down to 6.3 and those felt more comfortable.
Legs - I increased weights on a couple of things. Feels good to be lifting heavy again.
Saturday, I ran 10 miles on the treadmill in the basement. I could have waited until Cornbread got home to run outside, but I was a little upset about something and was itching to run it out so I got on the treadmill. I had planned to do between 8 & 9, but as I got closer I figured I might as well just do 10. I really probably could have done a few more, but by that time I had decided to stop at 10, so I did. Felt good... started out at 6.0, but ran most of it at 6.2 or 6.3. I can definitely feel a difference between running on an empty stomach in the morning and running in the afternoon after having eaten breakfast. I should try to eat a few almonds or something before I head out in the mornings from now on.
Thought I might start with WW this week, but then remembered that we have to meet my MIL for dinner tonight - probably Giordano's - and then we have Memorial Day weekend, so I should start up next Tuesday. It will give me some time to psych myself up for it and do some grocery planning. I have to psych myself up for being hungry because I always am for a couple of weeks at the beginning. My subscription ends August 9th, so I'll try to hit it hard at least through June and then when I start training again in July, I'll have a better way of figuring out how to eat while running higher mileage.
It is really hot out. I can't step outside without sweating right now. My face has broken out quite a bit and feels incredibly greasy - like I need to wash it several times a day - due to the humid weather. I hate that more than anything. Ick. I really wish that there was a time limit on zits... like once you hit 30 you magically never had another one. I had 2 good, clear years and now the last 5 months have been horrible - not sure whats going on... kind of sick of it, though!

Workout: 8.55 miles
Time: 1:29:08
Pace: 10:25
Weight: 122.6
It has been incredibly windy for the last few days. Very high wind gusts going in all directions. I was very scared to do my run today and actually asked Cornbread if I could run in the morning instead of the afternoon (we would switch times) so I'd have more likelihood of calmer weather. It rained sideways last night. Terrible! When I went out this morning, though, it was pretty calm. The wind picked up a little bit into my run, but it wasn't terrible and by the time it picked up I didn't have much longer to go in the direction that was against it.
I wanted to do 8 - 8 1/2 miles today as we are tapering, but I wanted to keep a pretty long run in there. I had a route planned out before I left, but 2 1/2 miles into it I decided I didn't want to do that route and changed my plans - but I didn't have another 8 1/2 mile route in mind that I could do from where I was at. So I basically meandered through the neighborhood adding some streets here and there. I ended up with an 8.55 mile route by sheer luck. I probably would have done better and enjoyed my originally planned route, but it didn't have any drinking fountains so I didn't want to do it. I should have done it, though.
I could tell I was running a pretty fast pace again and would consciously try to slow myself down, but it was hard. I ended up with a 10:25 pace, but I made several walking breaks in the last 3 miles. Not intentionally... all of the sudden I would find myself stopped and walking and would get mad at myself! Especially if I was running against the wind. I was surprised that my pace ended up being around my normal run-outside pace of 10:20. With the amount of walking I did, I figured I would have up near 11:00 or higher. I was very pleased with the 10:25.
My weight has come down and has stayed down for 3 days straight. I think I've done a better job of drinking water, but I have also been eating more (and running less). I really think that I've been in starvation mode for a while - not eating enough. If I'm going to run another race in the fall, I'm going to have to be a lot more intentional about my nutrition... I just hate figuring that all out.
As of today, I hate the idea of running 13.1 miles. I think doing a long run first thing in the morning is a bad idea. I remember running 8 1/2 miles the day after we got back from Colorado and feeling pretty good about it. Not as much the case today. That was in the afternoon - this was in the morning. I'm sure it will be fine.
